NMBW: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
MARK: A doctor. My father was a physician and since I did well in school, my teachers always pushed me towards medicine. So (of course!), I chose to study mechanical engineering in college.
NMBW: How did you end up as a CFO / financial person?
MARK: There was a gap in finance, accounting, cash flow management, etc., that needed to be filled. My partners could already tell that I had an aptitude for this type of work.
NMBW: What did you do to contribute to / advance your company during the past year?
MARK: Changed the business model to promote licensing of our IP and eventually offer our software as a service.
NMBW: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve met as a CFO and how did you handle it?
MARK: Ramping up sales. I analyzed the possible market segments and prioritized according to the likelihood for success - causing APT to focus on oil / gas customers.
NMBW: What do you think has been your biggest accomplishment as a CFO?
MARK: Closing the sale of our first major project for the oil / gas industry with Suncor Energy, a leading oil sands recovery company.
NMBW: What is the best single piece of financial advice you would offer a small business owner?
MARK: Manage your cash flow well! Financial statements provide historical information, but you need a forward-looking model to really understand and track where the dollars flow.
